Coconut oil is one of the healthiest and most versatile oils available. It is perfect to replace your current cooking oil and can be even used to nourish your hair and skin. One the secrets of coconut oil are the high levels of healthy fats, called Medium-Chain Triglycerides, which provide many health benefits to your body.

Medium-Chain Triglycerides (or MCTs) help to kill bacteria and fungal infections in the body, increase the good (HDL) cholesterol and reduce bad (LDL) cholesterol, and increase energy expenditure to help with weight management.

It is perfect for athletes and those with an active lifestyle as, unlike carbohydrates, which produce insulin spikes, the healthy fats of coconut oil produce a steady release of energy, to sustain you either throughout the working day or in preparation for exercise.

Coconut oil is also an excellent skin moisturiser and provides protection against hair damage. The oil can be applied directly to the skin and hair, to promote soft skin and shiny hair.

What is coconut oil?

Coconut oil is extracted from the flesh of mature coconuts and is a flavourful, healthy cooking oil used around the world.

How long does coconut oil stay fresh?

Coconut Oil has a shelf life of approximately two years.

How should I store coconut oil after opening?

Coconut oil can be stored either at room temperature or in the fridge; even if the product becomes liquid, it will not spoil. Storing coconut oil at room temperature allows the oil to be spread and scooped more easily.

What is the melting point of coconut oil?

The melting point of coconut oil is 24˚C (76˚F) and therefore your product may turn to liquid if kept at room temperature, but this is not a problem. Even transitioning between solid and liquid multiple times will not affect the freshness of the coconut oil.

How is coconut oil made?

After the flesh has been removed from the husk, it is moistened with water and pressed to release coconut milk and coconut oil which naturally separate.

How much coconut oil should I take each day?

It is generally recommended that to get the most benefit from coconut oil you should consume approximately 1-2 tablespoons of coconut oil each day as part of a healthy, balanced diet.

Why is it important to include coconut oil in your diet?

How is coconut oil beneficial in sport?

Coconut oil has many benefits for athletes and those leading an active and healthy lifestyle. It easily replaces any other oil used in your diet to provide a healthy, easily available source of energy that is perfect to incorporate into your preparation for race or match day. The antiviral qualities of coconut oil help fight infections, which are more common when your body has been put under physical stress.

How can I best use coconut oil to help me in my sport?

Coconut oil is really easy to cook with and goes well with protein powder to create protein brownies or pancakes. Or if you like a coffee beforehand, stir a teaspoon of coconut oil into it to bring out a lovely taste and also the many health benefits.

Why is coconut oil the best oil to use in cooking?

Coconut oil has a flash point or smoke point of 177°C, which is the temperature at which the oil begins to smoke and release harmful free radicals and toxic fumes.

This means it is suitable for most everyday cooking (unless you are searing meat) and use on salads. Coconut oil also is packed with healthy fats that help fight infection.

How much energy is in one serving of coconut oil?

In one 5g (teaspoon) serving of coconut oil, there are 45kcal

How can I use coconut oil for energy in sport?

Coconut is one of the only fats that can be used directly as energy and is therefore very useful for people taking part in endurance events as it provides a concentrated source of energy whilst sparing glycogen. Coconut Oil can be taken as it is or in smoothies for an energy boost.

What are the differences between coconut oil, coconut milk, and coconut water?

Coconut water comes from the centre of young, immature coconuts when they are initially cracked open.

The liquid in the centre of the coconut is sweet, light and can be drunk straight away.
Once the coconut matures there is very little coconut water left in the fruit as the white flesh of the coconut develops.

The thick, creamy liquid that can be extracted from the coconut flesh is the coconut milk.

Coconut Oil is the result of moistening the flesh of the coconut and compressing it to release the oil.

Medium-chain triglycerides are types of fatty acid with a tail of 6 -12 carbon atoms. MCTs can help the body burn calories, promote fat oxidation and provide a source of energy that the body can easily metabolise.

What are healthy fats?

Fats in the human diet come mainly in 4 categories: Monounsaturated, Polyunsaturated, Trans and Saturated.

Monounsaturated fats can help insulin resistance and reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol.

Polyunsaturated fats (PUFAs) include omega 3 and can lower risk of heart attacks.

Trans Fats have been shown to increase risk of cardiovascular problems and are caused by the hydrogenation of oils. They also increase LDL cholesterol and reduce HDL (good) cholesterol.

Saturated Fats (SFAs) are the most complicated group. SFAs that are rich in Myristic and Palmitic Acid (like Cheese and Palm Oil, respectively) can raise LDL and serum cholesterol levels but SFAs rich in Lauric Acid (like Coconut Oil) are actually beneficial to reducing LDL cholesterol and raising HDL cholesterol.

How does coconut oil aid weight loss?

Should you warm up coconut oil in the microwave?

You can warm up coconut oil in the microwave without any fear of it exploding, however, it will denature certain trace elements in the oil which are the source of so many health benefits.

Scientifically Proven Effectiveness

Coconut Oil is one of the healthiest and most versatile oils available. Coconut Oil contains healthy medium chain triglycerides (MCTs), is naturally saturated and free from trans-fatty acids. Although saturated fat generally has a bad image, the MCTs in coconut oil are good fats which are transported directly from the intestines to the liver.

In the liver, the MCTs provide a rapidly available energy source, which is helpful to sports people looking to maximise energy availability, or are converted to ketone bodies which help to reduce appetite.

The MCTs in Coconut Oil have also been shown to increase energy expenditure, with 15-30 grams of MCTs/day been shown to increase energy expenditure by 5% over the day. Therefore, MCTs are effective for weight management.

Coconut Oil contains high levels of lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid which have multiple health benefits. Specifically, they are antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-fungal and antibacterial and thus help to kill harmful pathogens including bacteria, viruses and fungi.

Additionally, lauric acid reduces Total and LDL (bad) cholesterol while increasing HDL (good) cholesterol, which may help to reduce risk of heart disease.

Further benefits of coconut oil include improving the moisture content of the skin and can protect against hair damage. Lauric acid easily penetrates the hair shaft and has a high affinity for hair protein which protects against protein loss in hair.

Coconut oil is a great hair conditioner, applying warm coconut oil to your hair at night and washing it out the next morning promotes soft, shiny hair.

When coconut oil is applied to the skin, they help to keep it smooth and moisturised. Consuming coconut oil in your diet also provides benefits to the skin by depositing healthy fats under the surface of the skin to promote firm, even skin and reducing the appearance of lines.

Coconut oil is especially good for very dry skin, for example applying coconut oil to hard, cracked skin on the feet can significantly soften the skin and alleviate the cracks very quickly

Really good flavour and taste isn't overpowering so goes well with all food, I only use it for frying but would be good as a butter alternative too.
